The home of Uncommon Sense: Providing Clarity, Promoting Intelligence

Welcome

Here we go again: Uncommon Sense is before you, ready to provide some fascinating commentary on a variety of matters. Here is what you will be sinking your teeth into with Issue 351:

As I am a teacher, as well as a life-long learner, I think it high time we explore the topic of Learning How To Learn, which the Self-Development column will explore. I take as a springboard a magnificent quotation from Ray Dalio, the founder of the largest hedge fund, something I recently taught my college students, and then I build on that thought. The Self-Development column will tell you all you need to know on the matter.  I consider this article one of the top 3 or 4 articles I have ever published.

I am pleased to once again welcome the brilliance of Victor Davis Hanson from the Hoover Institution to share his thoughts on what makes President Trump unique among U.S. Presidents in terms of the way in which he conducts war. What Professor Hanson, an eminent historian, has to say is provocative, learned, and, frankly, brilliant. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a clearer and more compelling thinker than VDH. Check out The Elephant in the Room column for a probing, compelling piece of profound insight.

For years I have contemplated the structure and function of questions. I consider questions, how they are structured, how they are framed, how they are often misused, constitute one of the most important intellectual tools in our toolkit. I’ve decided now is the time to offer a series of observations on six different types of questions. Thus, the From Ara’s Journal column will present the first of those six columns on the Art of the Question. I hope you enjoy these upcoming columns.

Finally, The World of Words column will enlighten you with a dandy of a word that you should use to express a concept elegantly. Commit it to memory, and utilize it.

OK, let’s get started.
