Pied, adj.

Pronunciation: Pīd

Meaning: Refers to having two (or more) differing colors, especially in blotches or patches. It is often used to describe animals, horses in particular. Birds, cats, and dogs are often the recipients of the adjective, although the term is not exclusive to animals. It can also involve clothing, or cars, or many other things.

Usage:

  • “The farmer owned a beautiful pied cow, with patches of black and white all over its body.”
  • “This particular jester wore a pied outfit, full of bright, clashing colors, perfect for entertaining the royal court”
  • “The pied pattern on the cat made it look almost like a small wild animal.”
