The Rogue Prosecutor Movement

I recently listened to an eye-opening and very disturbing speech by a man named Charles Stimson. Stimson is the deputy director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. Here are some of the eye-opening things I learned from Mr. Stimson.

Roughly 90% of criminal cases in our country are handled by the 2300 elected district attorneys spread across 3,143 counties in the U.S. The remaining 10% of the criminal cases are prosecuted at the federal level by U.S. attorneys who work for the Department of Justice, currently run by Merrick Garland.

For the 30-year period between 1985 and 2015, the elected county DA’s, regardless of party affiliation, did a credible job within the criminal justice system. The drove crime rates down by prosecuting violent criminals while at the same time created thousands of alternatives to incarceration for certain crimes – alternatives such as drug courts, domestic violence courts, mental health courts, etc.

But something changed starting in about 2015.

What changed?

Billionaire George Soros (seen above) began the process of funding the “progressive prosecutor” movement.

What is that?

It is a movement that is driven by two flawed beliefs:

  • The first belief is that the entire criminal justice system is systemically racist. Let me be precise. Let’s imagine a black man robs a gas station and shoots and kills the attendant who was working that night. George Soros believes that putting that black criminal behind bars is an example of racism – the criminal is being locked up, not because he’s a criminal, but because he is black. Soros believes that. He’s not alone.
  • The second belief is that the only way to fix the system is to dismantle it by replacing law-and-order District Attorneys with pro-criminal and anti-police District Attorneys. That is what Soros also believes, and that is what he has worked tirelessly to do for the last 30 years, while making great inroads in his agenda over the last 9 years.

This movement came to realize that it is prosecutors, not police officers, that are the gatekeepers of the criminal justice system. DAs decide whether to file charges and which charges should be filed. By replacing traditional prosecutors with attorneys who see defendants as victims, it would be possible to “reverse engineer” and dismantle the existing criminal justice system. Thus, over the past decade or so, Soros has spent more than $40 million on campaigns to elect rogue prosecutors. Under the guise of prosecutorial discretion, these rogue prosecutors simply refuse to prosecute entire categories of crimes that are on the books in their states. In Los Angeles County, for example, newly elected (2020) George Gascón simply decided with a wave of the hand that his office would no longer prosecute those who trespass, those who resist arrest, those who loiter for the purposes of prostitution, along with a litany of other crimes – totaling 13 specific crimes. Criminals can now resist arrest in LA County and face no consequences for doing so. In Chicago, Kim Foxx, two weeks into her job, unilaterally raised the bar for prosecuting felony shoplifting from $300 per incident to $1,000 per incident. In Chicago, you can steel a $900 Gucci bag from Marshall Fields and you won’t be prosecuted for doing so. And you can come back tomorrow and do it again and not be prosecuted.

Soros has been remarkably effective. Today there are more than 70 rogue prosecutors all over the country, mostly in blue states. They represent more than 72 million people and counting. That’s one in five Americans.

What have been the results of this Soros-led movement?

As anyone with an ounce of common sense could have predicted, crime rates have exploded in cities that have elected these rogue prosecutors. Here are some specifics:

In Philadelphia, let’s compare various crimes for the 5-year period between 2013 and 2017, when there was a traditional DA vs. what happened there starting in 2018, when rogue prosecutor Larry Krasner was elected. Here are the stats for the average annual figures:

  • Homicides: from 271 to 457 (a 59% increase).
  • Non-fatal shootings: from 1,047 to 1,588 (a 66% increase).
  • Aggravated assault: from 2,209 to 3,116 (a 71% increase).
  • Retail theft: from 7,412 to 9,084 (an 82% increase).
  • Auto theft: from 5,691 to 8,665 (a 66% increase).

While Soros and Krasner sincerely believed they were doing things to assist the black community, they actually did something that brought great harm to the black community since 83% of those homicides mentioned above involved black victims, usually by other blacks.

What about Chicago? For the six years prior to Kim Foxx becoming state’s attorney for Cook County in 2017, here is how the annual crime rates changed for the crime of homicide (again, these stats reflect the average annual figures):

  • Homicides: from 510 to 660 her first year in office, then it averaged up to 666 – with over 75% of the victims being black.

That’s almost 2 murder victims a day – every day of the year!

Chicago’s murder rate was much higher than the total number of Americans killed in action in Iraq between 2003 and 2010 (an average of 435 per year), and way higher than the number of Americans killed in Afghanistan during a much wider time horizon – 2001 to 2014 (an average of 141 per year)!

Chicago has become a veritable war zone!

The rogue prosecutor movement launched by Soros may have had good intentions, but the road to hell is paved with such things.

And that, my friends, is the latest elephant in the room.
